Mmm, I love banana bread. It's an especially good way to use up all the aging bananas I find in the dumpsters. :)

Comment on A Christmas Wish List by admin

I don't know. If I'd have gotten the wish list that has sparked so much controversy I probably would have looked it over, and if I couldn't have afforded anything or wasn't interested in buying the kid anything on the list, I would have perhaps just bought the kid a gift card or something that s/he could have used to begin saving for the toy s/he wanted. Perhaps sent the kid a card with ten bucks in it. Written in the card, "A contribution toward [object that you wanted for Christmas]. Merry Christmas!"
Or, if s/he was specific enough to list certain games or objects, I might have thought of different accessories that could go along with them, or other things that might complement the gift. For example, maybe s/he wanted a specific video game. Personally not wanting to spend the money on a game, I might have researched the game and then bought, let's say, a book that had the same types of themes.
I guess I just wouldn't have been personally insulted by a Christmas Wish List from a 12 year old that's had kind of a rough year.
And, last I checked, none of the family, that I'm aware of, celebrates the 'true' meaning of Christmas - Christ's birth and the Zoroastrian magi that came to visit him, or the celebration of various other gods/goddesses, like Mithras, Ishtar, and Sol Invictus.

So, when Christmas finally lacks commercialism in our society, I'll be more critical of people wanting Christmas presents for a holiday they don't understand nor believe in.

I don't mind Christmas wishes, but wishes pointed at relatives that cost over $100 is just a little tacky, imho. What happened to work for what you want? or learning the value of money, and the joy of being able to accomplish something for yourself? Call me silly, or maybe old-fashioned (can someone young be old-fashioned?)... anyway...

I love that movie! I agree; our past is what makes us who we are now, and why should we apologize for it anyway?

I agree that finishing the last few classes has to be your highest priority. It is so easy to get seduced by a job offer and become so distracted by life you just never get back to school. That piece of paper is worth thousands of dollars eventually. As for moving away from friends, hey, you did it before and found new ones in Ridgecrest, didn't you? Welcome to life - people we love will always come and go into/out of our lives. Those who are important we will find a way to stay connected to, and the Internet makes it so much easier than when I was your age.
Deciding to narrow what you want/need to do for your life's work is one of those first big steps and don't feel bad if you make a few false starts (everyone does.) Follow your heart before you follow the money, but eventually you need to decide something. The good news is you can change your mind!
Off the soapbox now...
Love Ya! Gary and Patty
